about

This set of pieces relates to a long-standing interest in composing live electro-acoustic music that blurs distinctions between composition and improvisation, acoustic and electronic sound, and control and random events. Over the past year we have rehearsed together as I developed computer compositions ranging from a failed attempt at a generalized improvising machine, to completely pre-determined electronic accompaniment for improvisation. This process has allowed me the opportunity to make mistakes, throw out several pieces and start the whole project over several times. The four pieces in this set explore a spectrum of possibilities for ensemble and interactive computer-generated sound. The structures range from open-ended to fixed, with loosely-bounded guided improvisation in between.

Zorn's interest in vocal utterance has resulted in a series of pieces in which spoken language is interrupted by electronic forces, drawing attention to the gap between speech and sound. ... more
